Black Friday is Friday, November 27, 2026. The best preparation is not a long list of stores. It is a short list of purchases with a budget and clear reasons for buying. Here is a plan you can use before the first sale arrives.
Start with a purchase shortlist
Write down what you would buy even without a sale. Separate replacements for broken or inadequate items from optional upgrades and gifts. Give each item an ideal price, a maximum total budget, and a deadline. This makes it easier to reject an attractive-looking discount on something you do not need.
Research the exact specification
Use the full model number, configuration, storage size, and color when comparing listings. A retailer-exclusive model can look similar to a familiar product while having different features. Record the details that matter most: laptop memory, TV panel and ports, vacuum navigation, or appliance capacity. Compare equivalent products, not just similar marketing names.
Set a realistic all-in price
The checkout cost may include tax, shipping, delivery, installation, accessories, subscriptions, and disposal of an old product. Large appliances and electronics can have particularly meaningful add-ons. A discount is only useful when the total expense fits your budget.
Check before the sale begins
Record the current price at two or three retailers on the same date. Keep a screenshot or dated note and note whether a price is a list price or an actual selling price. If a future sale is advertised against an inflated reference price, your record provides a more useful comparison.
Plan for limited quantities
High-interest items sometimes sell out or change price. Decide in advance which specifications you can compromise on and which you cannot. Avoid substituting a lower-quality version merely because the primary model disappeared. Check shipping timelines and return windows before purchasing gifts.
Review after purchase
Save the invoice and retailer return terms. Check whether there is an applicable price-adjustment policy, but do not assume every store has one or that Black Friday purchases qualify. After the weekend, review what you bought and whether it solved the original need.
Bottom line: The strongest Black Friday purchase is one that would make sense at the final checkout price even if the advertised percentage-off badge were removed.
